Last year, over one third of Ohio's 130,000 kindergarteners arrived on their first day of school
not prepared to succeed as learners. In your role as a parent, you have the opportunity to shape your child's
future. When you read and talk to your child, you help develop the language and literacy skills they need to
become successful readers and learners.
The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County is offering a new series of workshops called
Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library. These workshops can help you learn about the six early literacy
skills that children must know before they can learn to read. Children who enter Kindergarten with these skills
learn to read more easily. Much of school success is based on being a good reader. Helping children get ready
to read must be a priority.
Workshop participants will receive three free books at each workshop. There are three different workshops:
Early Talkers, Talkers, and Pre=Readers. Space is limited, so please call ahead to pre-register.
*This project funded in part through an Institute of Museum and Library Services LSTA grant awarded
by the State of Ohio.
